Scholarship Recipients The 2009 David Ascione Memorial Scholarships were announced by 200 Club Trustees. These scholarships are provided in the name of David Ascione, a founding trustee of the 200 Club of Ocean County. The scholarship fund is administered by the Ocean County Foundation and is open to students who attend the College, and are either personally involved or have a family member involved in the uniformed services. This year, over $10,000 in scholarships were awarded to initial and renewal recipients. Initial recipients are Marc Fichtner, Kevin Licknack, Marjorie Dugan, and Kaitlyn Seaman. The renewal recipients are Rachel Elyse Ascione and Jennifer Meyer. Katrina-Like Storm Could Devastate NJ Shore A NJ State Police helicopter recently hovered over the barrier islands of our Ocean County. The occupants of the chopper were troubled by what they saw. They saw miles of very low lying land with little to stop surging storm waters except very valuable homes. He also saw the devastation of Katrina first hand. In September, 2005, Major Hunt was designated the Commanding Officer of Operation L.E.A.D. – “Louisiana Emergency Assistance Deployment”. Over 600 personnel from across the state, along with representatives from the New Jersey State Office of Emergency Management were deployed in a unique self-reliant response to aid with the Hurricane Katrina disaster impacting the City of New Orleans. The dense population of the Jersey shore and the unpredictability of the Atlantic Ocean make for a tenuous situation during hurricane season. Preparedness is key according to Hunt. “Despite warnings of potential levee breaks in Louisiana, no one believed it could truly happen. The best way to avoid a repeat of that catastrophe here is to listen to emergency management personnel and communicate,” he warned. Major Hunt did say that he was very impressed with the preparedness and cooperation of Ocean County emergency management personnel. “We went all over the state and we basically heard the same thing. What can you give us? What do you have for us?” he said. When we arrived here, we heard “This is what we have in place and how can we work together?” Major Hunt believes that although we may be vulnerable to hurricane damage, we are among the best prepared areas in the state. “You are in good hands here, so should an emergency occur, listen to what the emergency personnel are saying. 50/50 Raffle This year’s major fundraiser is a 50/50 Raffle. But rather than selling thousands of tickets for a small set of prizes we’re selling just 500 tickets and offering a 1st prize of as much as $8,750. The raffle tickets cost $50 each and we’re giving away 70% of the prize pool to the lucky winner. What’s more, 2nd prize can be as much as $2,500 or 20% of the prize pool; and 3rd prize of $1,250 or 10% of the prize pool. But we need your help to pull this off. Your newsletter will have enclosed two tickets—one for you and one for your friend/workmate/partner/spouse or neighbor. Give him or her the attached letter and ticket, collect the $50 and send the completed stub—and your completed stub—along with $100 to the 200 Club of Ocean County, c/o Ed Liston, P.O. Box 1056, Toms, River, NJ 08754. If everyone does that we will have reached our goal of 500 tickets and you and your friend will have excellent chances to win some serious cash. The prizes for the raffle will be drawn at a season ending bash hosted by our friends at Martell’s on Thursday August 13th at 6 PM. Your ticket stub gets you in. Dave Bassinder has graciously offered all raffle participants a free buffet (drinks are on you). The prize drawings will be held at 8 PM. All proceeds from the raffle go to the 200 Club of Ocean County. With your help, we will be able to give out more scholarships, and continue helping families of police, fire, and first aid members who have been incapacitated in the line of duty. |
